Diploma of Management

About the Program
The Diploma of Management has been created to reflect the role of individuals who are engaged to manage the work of others or to add value to or review management practices. Their role may be in any industry or organizational setting, including private and public sector, large and small to medium sized enterprises and profit driven and not for profit organizations.

Central to the program is the development of the skills to lead and manage continuous improvement systems and processes within an organization.

The Diploma program also develops:

The Diploma of Management develops the skills and knowledge that will make you ready for management level positions within all sectors of industry and commerce

It provides individuals with the fundamentals in managerial work disciplines, in particular the management of teams, departments and projects. The Diploma of Management provides skills to lead and manage continuous improvement systems and processes within an organization.

Individuals will become familiar with a wide range of management techniques and approaches, and will improve self-awareness as they are exposed to a diverse range of managerial concepts, challenges and contexts. The program develops an extensive base of practical skills that will enhance your productivity, effectiveness and your ability to thrive in a continually challenging business environment and emphasizes the crucial role of sustainable and innovative management practices.

Structure of Program
  • To gain the Diploma of Management, individuals must successfully complete 8 units of competency
  • 5 of these are 'core' or compulsory units, and 3 units are Electives
  • The current structure of the program is set out below
Develop workplace policies and procedures for sustainability
Aspirants are encouraged to develop the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and implement sustainable work practices.

The focus is on small business owners, executives of large and small to medium sized enterprises, and senior personnel in government agencies and NGOs.

The course develops procedures which are benchmarked to 'international best practice' – the ISO 14000 standards – but demonstrates how these standards can be adapted to entities of all sizes.

Build and sustain an innovative work environment
This unit aims at creating an environment that enables and supports the application of innovative practice.

The major focus is on leadership or management role suitable for any organization. This unit enables individuals to work with any global organizations.

The unit focuses on the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement a holistic approach to the integration of innovation across all areas of work practice.

Manage people performance
It's imperative to manage performance of staff and this unit aims at honing aspirants to do it effectively.
Development of key result areas and key performance indicators and standards, coupled with regular and timely coaching and feedback, provide the basis for performance management.

This unit applies to all managers and team leaders who manage people and covers work allocation and methods to review performance, reward excellence and provide feedback where there is a need for improvement. Develop and implement a business plan
This unit aims at developing and implementing a business plan so as to enable organizations to function smoothly.

This mainly applies to senior persons and encompasses typical elements of a business plan and the standard approaches to be used in implementing a business plan.

The business plan should be supported by a strategic plan, and may also be supported by a marketing plan and cash flow forecasts.

Ensure a safe workplace
To establish, maintain and evaluate the organization's occupational health and safety (OHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area in accordance with OHS legal requirements.

Managers learn the significance of management responsibility for OHS and a systematic approach which ensures compliance with relevant legislative requirements.

Manage personal work priorities and professional development
This unit applies to managers and focuses on the need for managers to be organized, focussed and skilled, in order to effectively manage the work of others. As such it is an important unit for most managers, particularly as managers serve as role models and have a significant influence on the work culture and patterns of behaviour.

Ensure team effectiveness
This unit applies to managers and addresses the need for managers to facilitate work teams and to build a positive culture within work teams.

The unit takes a systematic and planned approach to developing teams. It includes the soft skills as well as more structured approaches to the management of teams.

At this level, work will normally be carried out within complex and diverse methods and procedures which require the exercise of considerable discretion and judgment, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

Employability Skills
The Diploma program seeks to develop the key employability skills required of managers operating effectively in the work-force and the following skills and capabilities are outcomes of the program.
